Etta Proctor [1910 - 1987] Jenkins Letter, 10 February 1974

LETTER FROM ETTA PROCTOR JENKINS, 12 Rutledge Road, Newport News, Virginia, sister of my mother ALICE PROCTOR BELL, to EARL P. (Sonny) BELL, JR., 1105 Abbot Lane, Park Forest South (now University Park), Illinois 60466, written Sunday afternoon, 10 February 1974. Donna Campbell Bell is the wife of Earl P. Bell, Jr.

Dear Sonny, Donna and Family,

We are so glad to get your letter this week. I write so seldom to anyone that you can see I don’t even keep any decent writing paper. I hope all of you are well and the weather has cleared some there. We have had rain, snow and freezing temperatures this week but today is beautiful. We are as well as usual including Beth and family. They always come by on Sunday after church and have lunch with us, so they haven’t been gone long.

Referring to the Census records you sent me. I am real concerned about it and am familiar with some of the things you have a record of. First correct my father’s birth. He was born JOHN SIDNEY PROCTOR [1872 – 1934] in 1872, September 23. Mama was born in 1882, May 26th. Her full name was MARY ELIZABETH JONES PROCTOR [1882 – 1957].

Now I will tell you what I know about the PROCTORS. So far your Census record is correct, the best I remember. Papa did have a brother who died before he was born so that was Joseph. I assume, Mama and Papa were married in Nash County, NC. They first lived near Sandy Cross, which was a cross roads with a church named Sandy Cross that Papa gave a lot of money to. It was a Methodist Church and then the place was thickly populated with houses and a store. They lived with Grandmama Proctor [SARAH JANE VAUGHN PROCTOR], who was SARAH JANE VAUGHN before marriage and she lived with Papa and Mama until she died. Of course, they moved to another house which was their home. All of these places were in Nash County, so that is where they married I do believe. That’s all, except I don’t know what year Grandpapa [HARRISON [HARRY] HANSEL PROCTOR, JR.] died, see he was dead when Mama and Papa were married. Now if you want to know about my grandmother SARAH JANE VAUGHN, she had a brother name HODGE VAUGHN. His wife was name PIETY, they had sons named HENRY, THOMAS, RUSSELL, CLAY and WENDELL. A daughter named BLOOMER. WENDELL VAUGHN is the one that was a doctor, but is now dead, in fact none of the family is living except HENRY. They either lived in Nash or Wilson County, I think.

Now about Grandpa JONES [JOHN [JACK] DANIEL JONES] and Mama’s mother BEDIE [TREVATHAN]. Grandpa’s full name was JACK DANIEL JONES. He was either from Nash County or Wilson County ands so was his wife BEDIE. Grandpapa has a sister named NANNIE and she married JOE TALBERT or TOLBERT. I’m not quite sure of his first name, but they had a son named JOE. If Grandpapa JONES had any more sisters and brothers I don’t remember. Mama’s mother BEDIE died when Mama was born, she had a stroke, so her death would be 1882 when Mama was born. Grandpapa remarried to my step-mother [actually step-grandmother] whose name was MARTHA [PEEBLES] and Mama had several half brothers and sisters. Mama was the first child [by BEDIE TREVATHAN]. {Her half brothers and sisters by MARTHA PEEBLES JONES were CALVIN [who MARY ELIZABETH JONES told me that he taught her to dip snuff when she was about 11 years old], JIMMIE, MAGGIE, PEARL and NANNIE. Mama has an uncle by the name of CARR JONES, who was in the Civil War. He lost one of his legs in the war, I remember well Mama telling me this. I forgot to tell you about Grandpapa Jones’ death. I don’t remember the year [1922] he died but it was in the country before we moved to Rocky Mount [in 1930]. I know I was real small. Maybe it help you to tell you that I was 16 years old when we moved to Rocky Mount and it was a good many years before then [Jack Jones died in 1925]. I hope that this will help you some. I think he was living in Nash County when he died.

Now getting back to BEDIE TREVATHAN, Mama never knew her mother’s people much but I do remember her speaking of some of their names of her brothers and sisters and they sound right [in the Census Records]. Mama told me that all the Trevathans or most of them moved to Virginia when she was small girl and she never heard from them again, which was very sad but I guess it was because Grandpapa [Trevathan] remarried.

That’s about all I know to tell you until you find some more information. If I can be of any help to you please let me know. This writing is so bad but its just like taking a dose of medicine for me to write almost. Hope all of you are well. Please write me again and give Karen and Timmie a hug and kiss for us.

We love all of you,

Uncle Jimmie and Aunt Etta

P.S. If I haven’t made anything in this letter that is clear to you, please don’t mind asking me again.

Peggy Poplin Letter to Earl P. Bell, Jr. - 30 September 1974

Route One, Box 5F
Ahoskie, NC 27910
30 September 1974

Dear Mr. Bell:

I wish that I could give you the information you want on Jack Jones but I know very little about him. My mother Bertha Ann Jones Barnes lives in Rocky mount but will not be very much help to you. She has arteriosclerosis. She is the oldest child of Calvin Martin and Lillie Joyner Jones. Grandmother Lillie, is still living, and I think she will be a great help to you. She and Calvin had eight children and six of them lived to be adults. The oldest son, John Daniel (Ben) Jones, died about a year and a half ago. The other children of Jack Jones and Martha Peebles Jones were: Richard, Calvin, Jr. Fannie Mae and Thelma. Grandmother lives with Thelma (Mrs. Lewis F. Rinehart) and their address is: P. O. Box 1031 Dalhlgren, Virginia 22448. Another person who could help you would be the only child of Maggie Jones Daughtridge, Mrs. Selby C. (Ruth) Winstead, 712 S. Tillery Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27801. I think Jack Jones is buried in the cemetery across from Barnes Hill Church in Nash County, NC. Granddaddy Calvin and his mother, Martha, I know are buried there. I think Jack Jones died before my mother and father were married. I remember grandmother Martha, she died about 1940. I am sorry that I can't be of more help to you. I would love a copy of the family lines.

Your truly,

Peggy Poplin

JOHN PROCTOR - EARL P. BELL, JR. CONVERSATION

ABOUT

THE PROCTOR FAMILY OF EDEGECOMBE, WILSON and NASH COUNTIES, NORTH CAROLINA

in

Aulander, Bertie County, North Carolina

28 December 1975

The following conversation took place on the 28th of December, 1975 in Aulander, North Carolina between JOHN HANSEL PROCTOR, age 82 , son of WILLIAM HENRY PROCTOR and MINNIE MOORE PROCTOR, grandson of HANSEL HARRISON (HARRY) PROCTOR, JR. AND SARAH JANE VAUGHN and EARL P. BELL, JR., age 37, son of EARL P. BELL, SR. and ALICE LEE PROCTOR. ALICE PROCTOR is the daughter of JOHN SIDNEY PROCTOR, who was the brother of WILLIAM HENRY PROCTOR, the father of JOHN HANSEL PROCTOR. EARL P. BELL, JR. is the great grandson of HANSEL HARRISON (HARRY) PROCTOR, JR. and SARAH JANE VAUGHN. The summary of the conversation is provided here by EARL P. BELL, JR.

The essential genealogy of the PROCTOR Family of Edgecombe, Wilson and Nash Counties, North Carolina is:

HANSEL HARRISON PROCTOR, SR [born: ca. 1793. married: ca. 1830. died: bet. 1850 & 60 = Wife: SALLIE. born: ca 1805. died: bet. 1870 & 1880]

[Children of: (1) GRANDBERRY PROCTOR born: ca. 1832. married: 22 Sept. 1853 to ELIZABETH VAUGHN, sister of SARAH JANE VAUGHN. GRANDBERRY died: 1 Janaury 1865 in a Union prison near Washington, DC; (2) HANSEL HARRISON (HARRY) PROCTOR, JR. (see specifics below); (3) BETHANY PROCTOR. born: ca. 1836; (4) SALLY ANN PROCTOR. born: ca. 1838; (5) MARTHA PROCTOR. born: ca. 1841; and (6) NANCY PROCTOR]

HANSEL HARRISON PROCTOR, JR. = SARAH JANE VAUGHN

ISAAC PROCTOR = WM HENRY PROCTOR = MINNIE MOORE

JOSEPH PROCTOR JOHN SIDNEY PROCTOR = MARY ELIZABETH JONES

JOHN HANSEL PROCTOR was born and reared in Nash County, North Carolina between Westry and Barnes Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He knew all the PROCTORS as well as the JOHN (JACK) DANIEL JONES Family. JACK JONES is the father of MARY ELIZABETH JONES PROCTOR. According to JOHN, HANSEL H. PROCTOR, JR. and his three sons - ISAAC, HENRY, AND SID attended the Methodist Church in Nashville, North Carolina. JOHN PROCTOR said that as an adult he was a member of the Oak Level Baptist Church as was the ALBERT TURNER BELL Family. ALBERT T. BELL is the grandfathers of EARL P. BELL,JR. JOHN (JACK) DANIEL JONES attended Barnes Hill Missionary Baptist Church. His daughter MARY ELIZABETH JONES PROCTOR attended the Falls Free-Will Baptist Church after 1930. [John Proctor and his wife Gertrude Joyner lived in their later years in Scotland Neck, North Carolina}

JOHN PROCTOR, when he was 18 to 19 years of age, worked in the county store of JOHN SIDNEY PROCTOR, grandfather of EARL P. BELL, JR., at Westry's Siding in Nash County. The work was from sunrise to sunset and after. SID PROCTOR would borrow money from local banks for stocking the store. Then he would run a credit business for the area farmers and their families. The only records kept were on tickets, no record books were used, and the balance from old tickets would be carried forward as each new ticket was started. Everyone was borrowing against their yearly crop. In the bad years in this rural economy destroyed everyone financially. Bad crops meant no payment on the money owed to Sid Proctor. While a businessman, like Sid Proctor, could have won a lien against a farmer's crop, such a remedy was not a realistic option when crops were bad. Despite the sizable volume of credit business sustained by Sid Proctor and the hard times that inevitably come in farming, especially tenant farming, almost everyone paid off their debts. It was a matter of family pride and honor.

The stock of Sid Proctor's country store was extensive. The stock included all kinds of farm implements and tools. Cloth of all types was sold; calico, outting, poplin (the most expensive cloth), and muslin. It was all sold by the yard. Molasses came in 800 to 900 pound barrels. Crackers came loose in 20 pound boxes. Cracker boxes were highly valued by local people and Sid Proctor maintained a written waiting list of people who wanted used boxes as they became available. Also, the round boxes in which cheese came were highly valued. JOHN recalled how many people would use the cracker boxes for carrying food to various functions, especially church meetings. A few individuals used the boxes for carrying clothes. Cider was a big seller. John remembered drawing several barrels (four or five barrels) on a typical Saturday. One Negro man, Yank Zimmerman, a tenant of Sid Proctor, stood out in John Proctor's memory. Yank had perfected a the skill of hanging around the store on Saturdays in order to get free glasses of cider which various men offered to all people in the store when they came in to shop. This behavior was especially upsetting to Sid Proctor. One incident that John related occurred on a Saturday, when Sid told Yank that he had freeloaded enough cider for one day. Yank did not respond in a fashion suitable to Sid, so Sid hit Yank on the head and in the struggle Sid's thumb got caught in Yank's mouth. John said that he picked up a Coke bottle and hit Yank several times until he released Sid Proctor's thumb.

There were a number of local characters that frequented Sid Proctor's store. The two most notorious, according to John, were Turner Whitney and a Mr. Edwards. Both men were called "conservative" by local people, a better term would have been "mizer." Both men were known for going barefooted from frost to frost. The bottoms of their feets were as tough as shoe leather. Mr. Whitney was infamous for coming into the store late in the afternoon and staying until ten or eleven o'clock at night. This practice was especially hard on John, who usually closed up, because he was anxious to get home, eat, and go to bed. John was paid $20 a month plus room and board at Sid Proctor's home. His next job was in Rocky Mount selling cars, a job that paid the increditable salary of $120 a month.

The store had a pot-belly stove around which a number of pop crates sat. There was usually a collection of black laborers in the store. Often John would measure out a small can of kerosene and throw it in the stove with an obvious explosive effect to run them out. Some of the favorite purchases by local people included sauage, cheese, sardines, and crackers with everything.

Also, John told about going to Oak Level School as a boy. Each family carried food to school for their children. John carried his lunch in a five pound lard pail. The larger the family, the Bells were one of the largest, the larger the food basket. A favorite luch was a sausage bisket. The basket would be placed on a fallen tree log and the kids from each family would come by for food usually dispursed by the most responsible child. Fights were common during the lunch hour over turn over lunch baskets or pails as well as just plain meaness. In this category, John recalled the behavior of Luther Bell.

The train between Nashville, North Carolina and Rocky Mount, North Carolina arrived in Westrys each day at 12 o'clock noon. and then at 4 P. M. it returned from Rocky Mount. Farmers would leave their wagons at Sid Proctor's store for loading with fertilizer, feed, etc. while they traveled to Rocky Mount and back. The merchandise was stocked by traveling salesmen. Delivery of all goods was by wagon and train. The work day was extremely long with Sid Proctor often eating supper and returning at night. Everyone worked until the last customer left the store.

John remembered that Sid Proctor for a short while was providing local people with fresh fish that came by train from Norfolk, Virginia. At first it made a good profit. Then the locals caught on to how to buy the fish at the cheapest possible price. They would just wait as late in the day as possible knowing that no process existed to keep the fish from spoiling over night. Finally, Sid dropped the daily fish business.

John stated that Sid Proctor was quite a handsome young man and that Mary Jones was easily the prettiest girl-woman in the county.

The families's hard times brought on by the Great Depression of 1929 destroyed Sid Proctor financially. By 1929, he was a sick man (he died in 1934). A mysterious fire destroyed the country store in 1920 or 30, burning all the credit records. My grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Jones Proctor, told me once that there were many people that lived in her section that after this event, would cross over the street in Rocky Mount, the Proctor Family moved to Rocky Mount in the 1930s. to keep from having to look her in the eye. John said that if Sid Proctor had been a healthy man with all his financial accume he would have surely survived the Depression.
